NBA vs. PBA legends

My earliest memory of a game that pitted NBA superstars against PBA standouts was when the Washington Bullets visited the country. The incomparable Joe Cantada brought the house down even before the opening tip when he said, “If the Washington Bullets have the ‘Big E’ (referring to Elvin Hayes) we have the ‘Big J!’ ” Obviously referring to PBA legend Robert Jaworski, the crowd went into frenzy as the packed Araneta Coliseum hosted that event.
On September 11, 2009, a new generation of basketball fans will be treated with the same kind of experience. The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Solar Entertainment Corporation will host an exhibition game featuring NBA Legends versus an all-Star team from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The event will again be held at the Araneta Coliseum and is expected to draw a sell-out crowd.
The NBA Legends team will be led and coached by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem is one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history, has six (6) championship rings and six (6) MVP trophies to show for it. His team will be composed of Dominique Wilkins, Robert Horry, Tim Hardaway and Vlade Divac. A supporting cast of players from the NBA D-League will complete their roster.
The PBA All-Stars will be spearheaded by 4-time MVP Alvin Patrimonio, “The Triggerman,” Allan Caidic, sweet-shooting point guard Ronnie Magsanoc and the only Rookie-MVP of the League, Benjie Paras.
“We are proud to team up with the NBA to bring the NBA Asia Challenge to the Philippines,” said Solar Entertainment COO Peter Chan. “It will be a dream come true for our fans to watch NBA Legends competing against the top local players.”
Edward Winkle, NBA Asia’s Senior Director-Business Development and Partnerships, could not contain his excitement about the event stating that the Philippines is obviously a basketball loving country and represents one of their biggest markets.
PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios welcomed the special event and said that the PBA is thrilled to be part of this exhibition game. He also sent out a warning that his PBA players will not hold back and will play to win.
The festivities will be spiced up by the presence of the New Jersey Nets Dunking Divas and their mascot Sly the Silver Fox. It will be a complete NBA in- game experience.
This is one basketball game a true fan should not miss.
